‘Self-absorbed’ pop music hits a bum note for Nicola Benedetti  The Times

Nicola Benedetti has criticised pop music for being “self-absorbed”, “self-analysing” and about “poor me”.

The acclaimed violinist said that many chart-toppers were too inward-looking and failed to tell a “more encompassing” story.

The best kind of music was “not always looking inward but trying to tell that more collective story”, she said, and the best music Classical music offered a more meaningful alternative.

However, she admitted that at parties she was the first to get up and dance, and was “not the classical musician sitting in the corner not joining in”.
