Chad Saylor found out the hard way that wearing your heart on your sleeve isn’t easy. Growing up in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania came with no exceptions. Throughout school he found no acceptance from the “in-crowd.” Staying true to himself meant enduring sacrifice, but this gravitated him toward other highly creative individuals.
His father played 50's, 60’s, and 70's music with an oldies group based out of Ohio. Exposure to the likes of the Beach Boys, Beatles, and Temptations shaped the character of a songwriter yet to be discovered. With his mother as a local beautician, he soon came develop his own sense of style. These two unique perspectives furthered his understanding of self at an early age.
It wasn’t until the fourth grade that he discovered his true calling. Seeing Hanson showed him that kids his age could be successful musicians and write their own songs. Over the next couple of years he felt driven to learn piano, drums, guitar, and bass so he could pursue his dreams of recording and writing his own music.
“My life changed forever when I heard Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson became my idol and my inspiration to always think creatively.”
Upon graduation, he decided that moving to Minneapolis to find his calling in the music industry was his only option. This was his way of escaping from the struggles of fitting in back home. He wanted to expose himself to new experiences, find himself, and write music that came from his heart.
The album began as a statement of self, songs strung together to create a concept, but it failed to describe who he was. He pressured himself to explore what he had learned from what he had lived and experienced. Writing with this in mind forced him to open up his mind to what felt right in his soul. What he ended up with resembled what he sought out in other artists, but never found. Brutal honestly left this once guarded musician exposed for the first time in years.
“The pain and frustration of not knowing what tomorrow brings is terrifying. It gives me the fuel to keep pushing my boundaries.”
