Biography
Kate was born in Downers Grove, Illinois. In a somewhat prophetic act her family abruptly moved to Medford NJ. A small lakeside village built on the site a former Leni- Lenape Indian settlement. Being a small percent Native American herself, Kate absorbed the ancient rhythm and melodies of her surroundings through her skin. Swaying birch trees sang as sweetly as violins. Music was always there.
She studied flute and classical piano from a very early age, but it was singing that always haunted her. The naked and uninterrupted flow of expression, the singularity of her being. No need for a Steinway to release her creativity. It comes right from the inside, straight to the world.
At the age of 16, while attending Lenape High School, Kate was discovered by Jiff Hinger and signed to In2n Records for which he headed Artist Development. She was whisked away to Nashville to write with Grammy winning songwriter Frank Meyers (All For One’s “I Swear”, Lone Star’s “My Front Porch Lookin In” both #1 hits!) and then to Jamaica Queens, New York with Darren Whittington (Brittany Spears). She was on her way. But as with most fairytales in the music world..it didn’t quite work out as planned. Lavish spending and endless infighting doomed the label from the start. In disgust Kate returned home, still in love with music, but not the music industry. She retired to a job at the local shopping mall selling greeting cards to strangers. It seemed so much safer.
“The drive to create music became unstoppable” says Kate. “ I looked around at the faces in the Mall, people just drifting through their lives. They probably had dreams once too and someone smashed them. I will not become that”. Back on track Kate was approached once again by Jiff, this time partnering up with Robert Jordan to create Camden Records, a Company that has it’s priorities straight. “ I was really excited but really skeptical. It took a little time, but now I feel like I’ve gone from a nightmare to a dream. It is safe to wake up now”.
Camden Records will release Kate’s debut album “My Story” in the fall of 2006. It has been a long road so far. But at only nineteen, the road ahead is so much longer.
