K-pop music license exchange gaining attraction as fandom monetization means – Pulse by Maeil Business News Korea – Pulse News
Backing music of favorite K-pop artists and making money out of it is gaining attraction as a hybrid investment to monetize on K-pop fever and fandom.
Seoul-based music copyright sharing platform Musicow has been running an exchange where music copyrights can be traded. The investor gets monthly dividend on the copyright fees.
The music license can trade as stock price based on the discounted cash flow.
There currently are about 540 copyrighted music trading on the platform, including TWICE’s Like Ooh-Ahh, and Wanna One’s Beautiful.
According to the Korea Music Copyright Association, the combined revenue of copyrighted music in Korea amounted to 220.8 billion won ($184 million) in 2019, jumping 60 percent in five years.
The highest yield from investment in music license was 10.1 percent, achieved by an investor who earned 7.92 million won through investment of 150 million won.
Due to the novelty in the investment, trade remains tepid and profit-making so far restricted.
