Classic Center announces 2021 Broadway series, season ticket pre-sale – Online Athens
The Classic Center has announced its 2021 Broadway Entertainment series, set to begin Feb. 4 with “The Simon & Garfunkel Story,” followed by “An Officer and a Gentleman” on April 29 and “Hairspray” on June 21.
Member presale for season tickets will be Sept. 30 and Oct, 1, and general sales will open Friday.
Last year’s Broadway series ended just shy of a full season, with the cancellation of the April 2 opening of “An American in Paris” and the closing of the Classic Center Theater because the COVID-19 pandemic. The venue has used the time away to renovate carpets, restrooms and the lower lobby lounge.
“The Simon & Garfunkel Story” is aminimalist, concert-style theater show that traces the success of the acclaimed pop duo by way of full band performances of their most well-known songs. The real Simon and Garfunkel haven’t performed together since 2010, so the show is the closest today’s audiences are likely to get.
“An Officer and a Gentleman,” based on the Oscar-winning 1982 movie, incorporates “Up Where We Belong” with a score of other 1980s hits into the inspiring story of a Navy boot camp recruit, his romance with a local factory worker, and the tough drill sergeant who teaches him humility.
“Hairspray” is a multiple Tony Award-winning show based on the 1988 John Waters comedy that takes place in Baltimore in 1962, where race relations and R&B music are seen through the eyes of a progressive, fashion-forward teenager named Tracy Turnblad.
